By the end of the week, the palace had learned how often Prince Cassian disappeared after dusk. Servants began exchanging knowing smiles. Advisors took inventory of his schedule with new suspicion. Junia could feel the pressure of that attention gathering at the edges of every hallway. It came to a head the night the queen summoned Cassian during one of their balcony hours. He returned an hour later, all the ease in his posture replaced by royal stillness. The silk curtains moved around him like patient ghosts. Junia set down her untouched tea and stood. “You don’t have to stay.” “I do if I want to tell the truth.” He moved to the railing beside her. “My mother knows there is someone. She does not know it is you. She reminded me that princes are rarely permitted private affections when public alliances are available.” Junia’s heart tightened, though not with surprise. She had always known the moonlit tenderness between them existed in defiance of daylight realities. “And what did you say?” Cassian looked out over the city — at the bridges, the lanterns, the distant gardens, the world he had been born to carry. “I said that for once I would like to choose a future I can answer for honestly.” The words stole what breath she had left. Junia turned toward him slowly. “Cassian…” He faced her fully now, all ceremony gone. “I know what this looks like. A prince making impossible promises under flattering light. But the balcony rule does not allow me to borrow language I do not intend. I am asking for a chance to court you openly, even if the court hates the simplicity of it.” Emotion rose swift and luminous in her chest.
