When morning comes, the midnight archive remains but Matteo is no longer bound to it. Celia Wren had learned to move carefully through the midnight archive beneath a cathedral library. Beauty could be a door, a warning, or a trap depending on who held the key. That night, wax candles, stone arches, dust like old snow, and moonlight caught in stained glass, and every ordinary rule seemed to loosen around the edges. Matteo Sable noticed the change before anyone else did. He did not rush toward her or pretend not to understand the silence. Instead, he waited with the kind of attention that made a room feel smaller, warmer, and much more dangerous. "Tell me what you want from this moment," he said, as if the answer mattered more than the risk. Celia expects the shelves to erase him; instead they create a new section labeled lives chosen with courage. The black ledger became more than an object between them. It became a language: pause, return, choose, confess. Around it, Celia Wren began to understand to decide whether truth was worth more than the safety of being unknown. Wanting was not the opposite of control. Sometimes it was the first honest shape control had ever taken. She files their story there herself, then locks the drawer and follows Matteo into daylight.…
