Iris should have ignored the note. The House of Vesper trained its staff to protect distance the way ordinary institutions protected silence. Yet she spent all morning thinking about the letter folded in her apron pocket, the ink strokes controlled and elegant, the question beneath them impossible to shelve. That night she left a book waiting on the front desk before Adrian arrived. It was wrapped in charcoal paper, unmarked save for a small strip of crimson ribbon. When he entered, shaking the rain from his umbrella, his gaze found it immediately. “You anticipated me,” he said. “No,” Iris replied, perhaps too quickly. “I cataloged accordingly.” He untied the ribbon with the kind of attention one usually reserved for music. Inside was a nineteenth-century novella about a woman who inherited a private reading room and discovered that every marginal note in its books had been written by the same anonymous admirer. “And which shelf is this from?” he asked. Iris met his eyes over the pool of amber light cast by the reading lamp. “Reciprocal.” The House grew quieter around them. Upstairs, a clock announced the hour with one measured chime. Adrian did not sit at a table as he usually did. Instead, he leaned one hand on the counter, close enough for her to catch the scent of cedar and rain. “You said there was no shelf after longing,” he murmured. “There isn’t.” “Then what is this?” He lifted the book slightly. Iris felt warmth rise beneath her collar despite every instinct for calm. “A correction.” That should have been the end of it. Yet when the final patron left and the last lamp in the west wing was extinguished, Adrian remained in the central reading room, already absorbed in the book she had given him.
